Spells

; Exploring the Dungeons of Avalon, a disassembly project

The German game manual for Dungeons of Avalon contains spell lists for all classes which can cast spells. For convenience, I’ve compiled them all into a single list and cross-checked them with game data.

You can learn a new level of spells from The Wise Three at every two levels after the first; i.e. 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15.

Spell effects

Most spells (27 of 46) are attack spells, which vary in amount of damage and number of targets. Damage is dealt in a random range as noted below. Target can be One enemy, a whole Group, or All enemies. Some other spells, like Disarm Trap, are self-explanatory.

However, some spells have a special effect:

Anti-Aura
A single-target attack spell, but instead of dealing damage, it removes the Dark Lord’s anti-magic aura.
Deadly Flash
Instant kill single-target spell.
Magic Eye
Click to show coordinates on the map. Duration 2.
Medusas Eye
Instant-kill group spell. Very powerful.

Non-attack spells:

Birds View / Eagles View
Automapping. Clicking the icon gives a top-down view. Any square you have ever stood on or moved adjacent to will appear on your map, even if the spell wasn’t active at that time. The difference between the two spells is that Bird’s View shows limited detail: passable squares as empty space, solid squares as wall, and doors normally. (See dungeon format for a list of square types.) Eagle’s View shows squares in detail, including stairs, hidden doors, etc. Duration of 0 in both cases.
Killmagic
Disappears forcefields. DoA2 only.
Levitation / Levitation II
Immunity to ice floor, but not pit traps. Levitation spells are actually coded to give you an attack bonus, but both spells have a 0 for the bonus given. Aside from MP cost, the only difference is duration: Levitation is 2, while Levitation II is 5.
Magic Armour
Adds +3 armour to the party for a duration of 5.
Magic Armour2
Adds +2 armour to the party for a duration of 3.
Magic Eye
Clicking the icon gives you your exact coordinates in the dungeon.
New Live
Returns a dead hero to life with exactly 6 HP.
Restoration
Full heals the party.
Teleport
Unavailable either as a scroll or spell.

Manual errors

The German game manual actually has some errors:

  1. Heilung III (Healing III) heals 4-9, not 5-19. It is effectively Healing I but for the whole party.
  2. The DoA1 manual incorrectly lists Flame Speer (Flammenspeer) as targeting Group, when it targets One. The DoA2 manual corrects the manual.
  3. The DoA2 manual incorrectly lists Frost Breath (Eisatem) as targeting One, and costing 10 MP. In both games it targets Group and costs 18 MP. The manual’s editor probably confused Eisatem for Eisstarre.
  4. In the Dungeons of Avalon manual only, Stemberfang is inconsistently listed as having a target of “All” in the Magician spell list, but “Group” in the Wizard spell list. It is correctly Group.

Trivia

  1. All spells have the same mana (MP) cost regardless of which class casts them. However, some classes get a spell at a lower level than others.
  2. Anti-Aura and Killmagic can only be found as scrolls.
  3. Teleport appears to be unavailable. It does not appear on the spell list for any class, and there is no scroll of Teleport in the item list.
  4. Scrolls of nine spells can be found in Dungeons of Avalon: Anti-Aura (1), Antipoisen (3), Eaglefang (1), Eagles View (1), Magic Eye (3), New Live (1), Restoration (3), Stemberfang (1), and Wasp Sting (2).
  5. Scrolls of 17 spells can be found in Dungeons of Avalon II: Anti-Aura (1), Antipoisen (3), Birds View (3), Deadly Flash (7), Eaglefang (2), Eagles View (3), Healing II (4), Ice Breath (1), Killmagic (16), Levitation (8), Magic Armour (4), Magic Eye (4), New Live (3), Restone (4), Restoration(3), Stemberfang (1), and Wasp Sting (2).
  6. Killmagic is used in Dungeons of Avalon II to disable magic walls (forcefields). These magic walls take up block slot 0x15, previously used in Dungeons of Avalon for loose stone walls. There are 11 magic walls in Dungeons of Avalon II, but a total of 16 scrolls of Killmagic appear in chests.
  7. All classes have exactly two spells per level. The exception is in the first Dungeons of Avalon, where the Magician and Wizard have only one spell each of level 8.
  8. Two unused spell slots appear in DoA1. Both have the name *** and are unobainable in game, but stats still appear.
    • Spell 0e would cost 22 MP, have unused spell type 03, and a target of All/Party. The description field of 01 references the unused spell text “THE PARTY WAS TELEPORTED.” The slot would later be used in DoA2 for Killmagic.
    • Spell 10 would cost 18 MP, and be an Attack spell with target Group, but no damage. The slot was used in DoA2 by Teleport.
  9. In the data, the Restoration spell has heal values of 4-9, the same as Healing I and Healing III. However, they are unused, as Restoration simply fills HP to maximum.

Changes in Dungeons of Avalon II

Dungeons of Avalon II makes the following changes:

  1. Three new spells are added: Disarm Trap (Ent. Falle), Killmagic (Magiekiller), and Teleport.
  2. The Healer gets Disarm Trap as a level 7 spell instead of Eagles View.
  3. The Magician gets Disarm Trap as an additional level 8 spell.
  4. The Wizard also gets Disarm Trap as an additional level 8 spell. With this, all classes have exactly two spells of each level.
  5. The armour spells are confusingly renamed. Magier Rüstung becomes Hexer Rüstung, while Hexer Rüstung becomes Hexer Rüstung2. In DoA1, they were named for their respective classes (Magier = Magician, Hexer = Wizard).
  6. Frosty Fist’s German name is changed from Eisstarre to Frostfaust.
  7. Internally, all non-combat utility spells are now given the type FF. In DoA1, Eagles View and Birds View had type Group and the others had type All. Erroneously, Frosty Fist had type FF in DoA1, which is corrected to Group in DoA2.
